Well it is one day after the NHL trade deadline and the balance of power remains on the West, although Pittsburgh has put themselves in a good spot this year in the East.  The Penguins may have given up their future however for this season, especially if Hossa opts to test the free-agent waters.

In the West Dallas and San Jose both bolstered their rosters with trade deadline pickups in Brad Richards and Brian Campbell, while Detroit and Colorado both added to their defense corps.  Colorado also made a splash with the signing of Peter Forsberg who will help the Avalanche get on the scoreboard more often.

The surprise of the deadline was the trade of Huet from Montreal for relatively nothing.  Price however backed up the trade by posting an impressive win last night.

Who will be the long term winners?  We won’t find out until the last games are played.

Darren McCarty has signed a one year contract with his former club the Detroit Red Wings.

The three time Stanley Cup winner will spend a week or two playing for their AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids for a conditioning stint.

He spent two years in Calgary before coming back to Detroit.  He should add some grit and depth to their offense.

Heated Blades Not Working?!

After four NHL players tested the new heated blade technology the NHLPA gave a big thumbs down for the approval of them.  Toronto’s Mark Bell, Chicago’s Martin Lapointe, Detroit’s Kris Draper, Edmonton’s Marty Reasoner and Calgary’s Matthew Lombardi all used them and Reasoner was the only person who thought they performed well.

Wayne Gretzky became a part-owner in the company and has stated that this product would revolutionize the game of hockey.

Therma Blade is a battery operated skate blade that heats up when you go on the ice and supposedly allows you to skate faster and accelerate quicker.  These claims appear to be false.

Darren McCarty back in the NHL?

Darren McCarty has begun what appears to be a comeback to get back into the NHL.  He had been playing in the IHL and now has made the move up the the AHL.  He signed a contract with the Grand Rapids Griffins, the farm team of the Detroit Red Wings, one of McCarty’s former teams.  His last NHL experience was with the Calgary Flames, but injuries forced him to miss most of the season.  Hopefully the reason for the comeback isn’t to pay off gambling debts.  Full Story Here.

Sundin’s Fate Decided This Week

There is a meeting between Mats Sundin, his agent and new Toronto Maple Leafs GM Cliff Fletcher to discuss where the team is headed and what part if any Mats wants.  It is believed the Leafs are hoping the former all-star will be willing to waive his no trade clause in his contract, however he has always said he will stay in Toronto if they are a playoff team.

Detroit, Vancouver and Calgary are all clubs that have expressed interest in him.  But it is more a question of who is Mats interested in joining.  Hopefully the Leafs can get this resolved soon so they can concentrate on a playoff run, something they have not had in some time.

Here is a funny commercial about him from a few years back!
