With less than a dozen games remaining in the NHL season the NW division is once again proving to be the most competitive in the NHL.  Three teams are tied for the division lead and only one is not going to make the playoffs at this point.

If the playoffs started today 4 of the 8 teams would be from the NW division.  Calgary, Colorado and Minnesota are all tied at 84 points with Vancouver sitting only two points back.  Only Edmonton would be on the outside looking in with a respectable 75 points.

This means that the final 10 or less games are more important than ever, and to add to the excitement 95% of the games are played between the division which means anything could happen.  Let the playoffs begin!

Well today is the big day and the moves are already happening.  So far the East has done a few minor deals and lost some big names and the West has continued to improve, sounds like the NBA does it not?  So far we have Brad Richards going to the Stars while Brian Campbell is now a member of the San Jose Sharks.  In a surprise move the Habs unloaded Huet to the Washington Capitals for only a second round draft pick.

Heated Blades Not Working?!

worldcup96_goal.jpg

After four NHL players tested the new heated blade technology the NHLPA gave a big thumbs down for the approval of them.  Toronto’s Mark Bell, Chicago’s Martin Lapointe, Detroit’s Kris Draper, Edmonton’s Marty Reasoner and Calgary’s Matthew Lombardi all used them and Reasoner was the only person who thought they performed well.

Wayne Gretzky became a part-owner in the company and has stated that this product would revolutionize the game of hockey.

Therma Blade is a battery operated skate blade that heats up when you go on the ice and supposedly allows you to skate faster and accelerate quicker.  These claims appear to be false.

Battle of Alberta Back

It had disappeared in recent years but this past home and home series between the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers has rekindled the hatred between the two Alberta rivals.

After Calgary suffered through an embarrassing 5-0 defeat they came back to destroy Edmonton 4-1, and in all honesty Calgary’s win was the more dominant of the two.

The battle has lacked intensity in recent times, but with the number of fights, hits and all around chippy plays these past two games have created a dislike for the opposing team that has been missing for quite some time.
