Well it is one day after the NHL trade deadline and the balance of power remains on the West, although Pittsburgh has put themselves in a good spot this year in the East.  The Penguins may have given up their future however for this season, especially if Hossa opts to test the free-agent waters.

In the West Dallas and San Jose both bolstered their rosters with trade deadline pickups in Brad Richards and Brian Campbell, while Detroit and Colorado both added to their defense corps.  Colorado also made a splash with the signing of Peter Forsberg who will help the Avalanche get on the scoreboard more often.

The surprise of the deadline was the trade of Huet from Montreal for relatively nothing.  Price however backed up the trade by posting an impressive win last night.

Who will be the long term winners?  We won’t find out until the last games are played.

Selfish Sundin

Toronto Maple Leaf captain Mats Sundin has decided to not waive his no trade clause and remain a Leaf.  There is a good chance the Leafs will lose Mats in the offseason and will  gain nothing losing him.

He could have let the Leafs deal him and then re-sign with them, thus improving the team without losing anything, aside from a few more games this year improving their draft pick.

This is in my opinion selfish as he is doing what is best for him, not the team he says he cares so much about.  If he were a true team player he would consider a move, but this once again shows why he has never taken the Leafs anywhere.

The Next Big Thing?

Crosby may be currently dominating the league (aside from his ankle injury) but could an undrafted kid from Sweden challenge him for supremacy in the NHL?  Ok, maybe not, but that hasn’t stopped NHL GM’s and scouts from flocking to Sweden to check out Fabian Brunnstrom.  He was a late bloomer that has been lighting up the Swedish League’s.  Last year he has 37 goals in just 41 games and is having a strong current season this year as well.  Where he ends up is anyones guess but you could see him with Sundin or the Sedin’s in the next NHL season. Sundin’s Fate Decided This Week

There is a meeting between Mats Sundin, his agent and new Toronto Maple Leafs GM Cliff Fletcher to discuss where the team is headed and what part if any Mats wants.  It is believed the Leafs are hoping the former all-star will be willing to waive his no trade clause in his contract, however he has always said he will stay in Toronto if they are a playoff team.

Detroit, Vancouver and Calgary are all clubs that have expressed interest in him.  But it is more a question of who is Mats interested in joining.  Hopefully the Leafs can get this resolved soon so they can concentrate on a playoff run, something they have not had in some time.

Here is a funny commercial about him from a few years back!
