The Day After

Well it is one day after the NHL trade deadline and the balance of power remains on the West, although Pittsburgh has put themselves in a good spot this year in the East.  The Penguins may have given up their future however for this season, especially if Hossa opts to test the free-agent waters.

In the West Dallas and San Jose both bolstered their rosters with trade deadline pickups in Brad Richards and Brian Campbell, while Detroit and Colorado both added to their defense corps.  Colorado also made a splash with the signing of Peter Forsberg who will help the Avalanche get on the scoreboard more often.

The surprise of the deadline was the trade of Huet from Montreal for relatively nothing.  Price however backed up the trade by posting an impressive win last night.

Who will be the long term winners?  We won’t find out until the last games are played.

Heated Blades Not Working?!

Posted in Calgary Flames, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Edmonton Oilers, Kris Draper, Martin Lapointe, Marty Reasoner, Matthew Lombardi, NHL, NHLPA, Therma Blade, Wayne Gretzky with tags , , , , , , , , on February 12, 2008 by flamesfan77

After four NHL players tested the new heated blade technology the NHLPA gave a big thumbs down for the approval of them.  Toronto’s Mark Bell, Chicago’s Martin Lapointe, Detroit’s Kris Draper, Edmonton’s Marty Reasoner and Calgary’s Matthew Lombardi all used them and Reasoner was the only person who thought they performed well.

Wayne Gretzky became a part-owner in the company and has stated that this product would revolutionize the game of hockey.

Therma Blade is a battery operated skate blade that heats up when you go on the ice and supposedly allows you to skate faster and accelerate quicker.  These claims appear to be false.

Cap to Increase

Posted in Calgary Flames, Hockey, NHL, NHLPA, Salary Cap with tags , , , , on February 7, 2008 by flamesfan77

Good news to Calgary Flames fans.  The NHL salary cap is expected to rise at least 3 million dollars, to over 53.3 million next year.  The original cap was 34.5 million when the lockout ended but has exploded in the three years since.

With the Flames locking up their core to expensive long term deals this will add some room to get a little more second and third line support to compliment the strong starting line-up.

This must be good news for the NHLPA as salaries continue to rise.

European Bound?

On I found an interesting article between Damien Cox and Scott Burnside about the NHL going to Europe and the NHLPA. I personally think it is a good idea to go, as it opens our game up to an area that is knowledgeable about hockey, but could grow significantly in the coming years.  Enjoy!
