The Trouble with Toronto

Posted in Hockey, NHL, Toronto Maple Leafs, Uncategorized with tags , , on March 27, 2008 by flamesfan77

Once again the Toronto Maple Leafs have screwed their fans over at the end of the season.  The team struggles throughout the year, but then at the trade deadline wins a few games to give Leaf Nation hope, and then lose at the end to finish a few points back of a playoff spot.

They miss out on a NHL lottery pick, and end up with a decent, but not great player, that sits in the system for years and offers no real benefit or solution.  They also never make any big deadline deals as they either feel they are in a position to make a run, or like this year cannot trade anyone worth while due to no-trade clauses.

I personally hate the Leafs, but am starting to feel sorry for their fans who get their hopes up every year, only to have them crushed just as fast.

Look at this shot from the far end against Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Vesa Toskala.

Some how it went in, but at least he had the last laugh bringing home a 3-1 win and keeping the leafs in the playoff hunt.

Kilger MIA

The Florida Panthers have suspended recently acquired forward Chad Kilger.  He was traded from the  Toronto Maple Leafs to the Panthers on the NHL trade deadline and immediately asked for a leave of absence form the club.

The Panthers thought it was only for a few days but he has not yet returned to the club, forcing Florida to suspend him without pay.

In 53 games with the Leafs Kilger had 10 goals and 7 assists.

The Day After

Well it is one day after the NHL trade deadline and the balance of power remains on the West, although Pittsburgh has put themselves in a good spot this year in the East.  The Penguins may have given up their future however for this season, especially if Hossa opts to test the free-agent waters.

In the West Dallas and San Jose both bolstered their rosters with trade deadline pickups in Brad Richards and Brian Campbell, while Detroit and Colorado both added to their defense corps.  Colorado also made a splash with the signing of Peter Forsberg who will help the Avalanche get on the scoreboard more often.

The surprise of the deadline was the trade of Huet from Montreal for relatively nothing.  Price however backed up the trade by posting an impressive win last night.

Who will be the long term winners?  We won’t find out until the last games are played.
