Western Conference Playoff Preview

Detroit vs Nashville:

Everyone thinks Detroit will run over Nashville, but Detroit has had problems in the playoffs in recent years.  Nashville also has been hot down the stretch.  I predict Detroit, but in 6.

San Jose vs Calgary:

Well you may think I made this choice because I am a homer, but I will give my rationale.  The Flames won the season series 3-1, with victories twice in San Jose.  San Jose has been hot since acquiring Campbell, but Campbell is not a solid playoff performer.  The same could be said about the Sharks as they have struggled in recent years.  Kipper also loves to play well against the team that gave up on him.  I say Calgary in 6.

Minnesota vs Colorado:

This is an even match up, but I think Colorado has been the better team when healthy, which they are(besides season ending injuries).  Minnesota will try and trap, but Sakic and Forsberg will be too much and Colorado will win in 6.

Anaheim vs Dallas:

This should be a great series.  Unless Turco stands on his head Anaheim will be too strong to overcome.  They have been hot since they got their two veterans back, and Gigeure is a great playoff goalie.  Anaheim wins in 6.

Predictions

Today I will attempt to predict tonight’s two games in the NHL.  I only have two games so it is a nice slow night to begin, and I will continue this for the rest of the year.  Scores don’t count but I will include it anyway.

Game #1 Minnesota vs Colorado-Prediction: Colorado 4-2  They get Foote and Forsberg back and have been hot since the deadline.

Game #2 Phoenix vs Vancouver-Prediction: Phoenix 3-1  The Coyotes shut them out 2-0 a week ago and Vancouver has been struggling, barely beating Dallas’ backup goalie on Saturday.  They also can gain ground on the last spot in the West

The Wild Wild NW

With less than a dozen games remaining in the NHL season the NW division is once again proving to be the most competitive in the NHL.  Three teams are tied for the division lead and only one is not going to make the playoffs at this point.

If the playoffs started today 4 of the 8 teams would be from the NW division.  Calgary, Colorado and Minnesota are all tied at 84 points with Vancouver sitting only two points back.  Only Edmonton would be on the outside looking in with a respectable 75 points.

This means that the final 10 or less games are more important than ever, and to add to the excitement 95% of the games are played between the division which means anything could happen.  Let the playoffs begin!

Forsberg Failure?

Just a week into the Peter Forsberg experiment,  it appears to be going South.  Forsberg has missed the Avs last two games due to a groin injury which proves it is more than his ankle that will have trouble keeping up in the NHL.

Forsberg has always had trouble staying the lineup and missed most of this season due to a recurring ankle injury.  In a surprise move he signed with the Avs days after saying he would not play in the NHL this year.

I personally think the signing was a poor decision as Colorado has had no trouble scoring goals, and at the time were getting their injured stars back.  Who knows though, only time will tell if this was a good or bad decision for the Avs.

Both Sidney Crosby and Peter Forsberg will be returning to the game tonight.

Sid the kid had been out since January with a high ankle sprain and will join his Pittsburgh Penguin teammates as they take on the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Meanwhlie out West Peter Forsberg will join the Colorado Avalanche as they face the Vancouver Canucks.  He will be a welcome addition as Colorado recently lost both Ryan Smyth and Marek Svatos for long periods of time.

Darwin Head has become Canada’s newest millionaire after shooting 15 pucks from the far blue line into an open net during the Vancouver Canuck/Colorado Avalanche intermission this evening.  He also won 4 Chevrolet Malibu’s, one for him, one for each of his two friends, and one for a fan in the stands.

Bobby Orr must have given some good advice! Congrats!
