Eastern Conference Playoff Preview

Posted in All-star, Hockey, NHL, Sidney Crosby, Stanley Cup with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 7, 2008 by flamesfan77

Well it is that time of year again, playoffs!  I will preview the East today, and tomorrow I will work on the West.

Montreal vs Boston:

If the regular season is any indication this should be a short series, but Montreal will be without their captain Saku Koivu and Michael Ryder.  The Habs went 8-0 vs Boston this year, and I believe will continue their dominance. Montreal in 5.

Pittsburgh vs Ottawa:

This is a match up of two teams heading in opposite directions.  The Penguins have been red hot, while the Sens have been cool and will be missing their captain Daniel Alfredsson.  I think Pittsburgh will win this series in six.

Washington vs Philadelphia:

This will be a high scoring affair that Washington should take with home ice.  Washington has been one of the hottest teams leading up to the playoffs and the Flyers have cooled off over the past month.  Look for Ovechkin to shine in his first post-season appearance. Caps take it in 6

New Jersey vs New York Rangers

Two division rivals square off and New York has dominated the season series, but I think Brodeur will keep the Devils in it with the home ice advantage.  Jagr has been hot lately, but I think New Jersey will take this in 6.

Tomorrow I will preview the West.

Emery’s Struggles

With the recent fine of almost $15,000 dollars, Ottawa Senators goalie Ray Emery continues to be a distraction to the Eastern Conference Leader.  He has had controversy with his Mike Tyson mask.  He was involved in a road rage case on his way to practice.  He was in a car accident that made him miss one practice.  He overslept for a playoff flight last year and now shows up to the wrong arena in Long Island and is justifiably told to miss practice forcing the Sens to have one goalie in practice.  He has also had tantrums on the ice during practice where he has broken sticks.  He has said that he has trouble getting motivated to go on the ice.  Newsflash, it is your job and you get paid over 3 million a year to do so!  Obviously being in a backup role this season would be hard after leading your team to the Stanley Cup final the previous season, but Emery needs to become a man and accept his role.  If he doesn’t Ottawa needs to do something about it to have a chance at repeating last years success.

Wild vs Oilers-The first of two all NW games tonight.  It pains me to say this but, Edmonton wins 3-1

Flames vs Avalanche-Two teams heading in the opposite direction-Flames win 4-2

Well today is the big day and the moves are already happening.  So far the East has done a few minor deals and lost some big names and the West has continued to improve, sounds like the NBA does it not?  So far we have Brad Richards going to the Stars while Brian Campbell is now a member of the San Jose Sharks.  In a surprise move the Habs unloaded Huet to the Washington Capitals for only a second round draft pick.

I will keep updating throughout the day!

Phoenix gets Marcel Hossa, Al Montoya and New York  for Fredrik Sjostrom, Josh Gratton and David Leneveu

Toronto trades chad kilger to florida for a 3rd round pick

L.A. trades brad stuart to Detroit for a 2nd and 4th round pick

The wild acquire Chris Simon from the Islanders for a 5th round draft pick

Marian Hossa and Pascal Dupuis traded to Pittburgh from Atlanta for Angelo Esposito, Colby Armstrong and Erik Christenson and a 1st round pick

New york gets Christian backman from St Louis for a 4th round pick

Toronto trades Hal Gill to Pittsburgh for 2nd and 5th round pick

Matt Cooke traded from Vancouver to Washington for Matt Pettinger

San Jose Gets Rob Davidson from the New York islanders for a 7th round pick

Colorado Gets Adam Foote from Columbus for a 1st round pick+pick if foote resigns

Washington gets Fedorov from Columbus for ted ruth

Ottawa gets Martin Lapointe from Chicago for a 6th round pick

Carolina gets Ruutu from Chicago for Andrew Ladd

Ottawa Adds to Scoring Depth

The Ottawa Senators and Carolina Hurricanes have completed a four player deal that sees two players per team going each way.  Ottawa is sending Joe Corvo and Patrick Eaves to the Hurricanes for Mike Commodore and Cory Stillman.

This will help give Ottawa some secondary scoring so their big three are not required to score every goal for the Sens.  Both Stillman and Commodore are unrestricted free agents at seasons end so this could be a rent-a-player scenario for Ottawa.

They both provide Ottawa with Stanley Cup finals experience which should help Ottawa in the playoffs this season.

Carolina gets some solid young players that should help with the offense and get them into the playoffs.
