Eastern Conference Playoff Preview

Posted in All-star, Hockey, NHL, Sidney Crosby, Stanley Cup with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 7, 2008 by flamesfan77

Well it is that time of year again, playoffs!  I will preview the East today, and tomorrow I will work on the West.

Montreal vs Boston:

If the regular season is any indication this should be a short series, but Montreal will be without their captain Saku Koivu and Michael Ryder.  The Habs went 8-0 vs Boston this year, and I believe will continue their dominance. Montreal in 5.

Pittsburgh vs Ottawa:

This is a match up of two teams heading in opposite directions.  The Penguins have been red hot, while the Sens have been cool and will be missing their captain Daniel Alfredsson.  I think Pittsburgh will win this series in six.

Washington vs Philadelphia:

This will be a high scoring affair that Washington should take with home ice.  Washington has been one of the hottest teams leading up to the playoffs and the Flyers have cooled off over the past month.  Look for Ovechkin to shine in his first post-season appearance. Caps take it in 6

New Jersey vs New York Rangers

Two division rivals square off and New York has dominated the season series, but I think Brodeur will keep the Devils in it with the home ice advantage.  Jagr has been hot lately, but I think New Jersey will take this in 6.

Tomorrow I will preview the West.

Ovechkin vs Crosby

Well this could get heated…Alexander Ovechkin is a better player than Crosby this far into his career.  I am not just going by his amazing stats this year.

The passion and energy he exhibits each and every night makes him a joy to watch.  He acts like a kid in a candy store every team he scores, or even his team scores for that matter.  He has been more productive on a team with less talent than Pittsburgh.

Sure Sid the Kid is a great player as well, but I see Ovechkin as a more dominating physical player.  He is the new power forward who can level a player and then feed a sweet pass to a teammate or roof a snap shot top corner.  That to me is what makes him more valuable.

Let the comments begin…

Two Stars Back Tonight

Both Sidney Crosby and Peter Forsberg will be returning to the game tonight.

Sid the kid had been out since January with a high ankle sprain and will join his Pittsburgh Penguin teammates as they take on the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Meanwhlie out West Peter Forsberg will join the Colorado Avalanche as they face the Vancouver Canucks.  He will be a welcome addition as Colorado recently lost both Ryan Smyth and Marek Svatos for long periods of time.

Hossa Injured

Pittsburgh Penguins fans got a scare in last nights game against the Boston Bruins as Marian Hossa was injured early in the second period after a knee on knee hit with a Boston player.

He joins Sidney Crosby and Gary Roberts on the Pens injured reserve.

He is expected to only miss a week however which is good news for a team which gave up its future for Hossa for a chance at the present.

Pittsburgh lost the game 5-1.

Better Without Crosby?

Posted in All-star, evgeni malkin, Hockey, NHL, pittsburgh penguins, sid the kid, Sidney Crosby, Stanley Cup with tags , , , , , , , on February 16, 2008 by flamesfan77

Since losing all-star forward Sidney Crosby the Pittsburgh Penguins have gone on a tear thanks to Russian sniper Evgeni Malkin.  After losing their captain to a high ankle sprain Jan 21 the Pens have gone 5-4-1, although they have lost their last two games in close contests.

Malkin has been on fire with 7 goals and 12 assists in the 10 game stretch.

If they keep this up who needs Sid the Kid?  Maybe they do but they are no slouch without him.

Crosby Back on The Ice

Sidney Crosby has resumed skating for the Penguins but he still expects to be out of the line-up for a while.  He suffered a high ankle sprain back in January against the Lightning and has not played since.

He was forced to miss the all-star game in Atlanta due to this injury disappointing many fans in attendance.  Penguins fans will hope to have him back and healthy ASAP to take a run at the Stanley Cup.

The Penguins have gone 4-2-2 without him but know they are a much better team with Sid the Kid in the lineup.

The Next Big Thing?

Posted in Hockey, Mats Sundin, NHL, Sidney Crosby, Toronto Maple Leafs with tags , , , , , on February 5, 2008 by flamesfan77

Crosby may be currently dominating the league (aside from his ankle injury) but could an undrafted kid from Sweden challenge him for supremacy in the NHL?  Ok, maybe not, but that hasn’t stopped NHL GM’s and scouts from flocking to Sweden to check out Fabian Brunnstrom.  He was a late bloomer that has been lighting up the Swedish League’s.  Last year he has 37 goals in just 41 games and is having a strong current season this year as well.  Where he ends up is anyones guess but you could see him with Sundin or the Sedin’s in the next NHL season.
