The Best Time of the Year

Posted in All-star, Calgary Flames, Hockey, Iginla, NHL, Sidney Crosby, Stanley Cup with tags , , , , , , on April 9, 2008 by flamesfan77

Hello Hockey Fans,

Today is what we all wait for.  The NHL playoffs begin tonight and I can’t wait.  First, we have Crosby in his sophomore playoff performance.  How will he perform in his second matchup against Ottawa?

Then we have the Flames vs the Sharks in what should be one of the best first-round matchups. Joe vs Jarome? Sign me up!

We also have division rivals the Rangers and Devils and Avalanche and Wild going to battle.

Ovechkin makes his debut against the Flyers, while the Habs look to continue their dominance against the Bruins.

I know I missed some matchups, but they are obviously not as exciting…

Enjoy!

Western Conference Playoff Preview

Detroit vs Nashville:

Everyone thinks Detroit will run over Nashville, but Detroit has had problems in the playoffs in recent years.  Nashville also has been hot down the stretch.  I predict Detroit, but in 6.

San Jose vs Calgary:

Well you may think I made this choice because I am a homer, but I will give my rationale.  The Flames won the season series 3-1, with victories twice in San Jose.  San Jose has been hot since acquiring Campbell, but Campbell is not a solid playoff performer.  The same could be said about the Sharks as they have struggled in recent years.  Kipper also loves to play well against the team that gave up on him.  I say Calgary in 6.

Minnesota vs Colorado:

This is an even match up, but I think Colorado has been the better team when healthy, which they are(besides season ending injuries).  Minnesota will try and trap, but Sakic and Forsberg will be too much and Colorado will win in 6.

Anaheim vs Dallas:

This should be a great series.  Unless Turco stands on his head Anaheim will be too strong to overcome.  They have been hot since they got their two veterans back, and Gigeure is a great playoff goalie.  Anaheim wins in 6.

Eastern Conference Playoff Preview

Well it is that time of year again, playoffs!  I will preview the East today, and tomorrow I will work on the West.

Montreal vs Boston:

If the regular season is any indication this should be a short series, but Montreal will be without their captain Saku Koivu and Michael Ryder.  The Habs went 8-0 vs Boston this year, and I believe will continue their dominance. Montreal in 5.

Pittsburgh vs Ottawa:

This is a match up of two teams heading in opposite directions.  The Penguins have been red hot, while the Sens have been cool and will be missing their captain Daniel Alfredsson.  I think Pittsburgh will win this series in six.

Washington vs Philadelphia:

This will be a high scoring affair that Washington should take with home ice.  Washington has been one of the hottest teams leading up to the playoffs and the Flyers have cooled off over the past month.  Look for Ovechkin to shine in his first post-season appearance. Caps take it in 6

New Jersey vs New York Rangers

Two division rivals square off and New York has dominated the season series, but I think Brodeur will keep the Devils in it with the home ice advantage.  Jagr has been hot lately, but I think New Jersey will take this in 6.

Tomorrow I will preview the West.

Predictions Wrap-Up

Well the regular season is now done, and I am pleased to announce that for the month or so that I have been doing this, I finished with a 77-44 record!:) That is almost a 64% success rate.

My last two days were 5-2 apiece which helped.

For the playoffs I am just going to make series predictions, which will be by conference over the next two days.

Emery’s Struggles

With the recent fine of almost $15,000 dollars, Ottawa Senators goalie Ray Emery continues to be a distraction to the Eastern Conference Leader.  He has had controversy with his Mike Tyson mask.  He was involved in a road rage case on his way to practice.  He was in a car accident that made him miss one practice.  He overslept for a playoff flight last year and now shows up to the wrong arena in Long Island and is justifiably told to miss practice forcing the Sens to have one goalie in practice.  He has also had tantrums on the ice during practice where he has broken sticks.  He has said that he has trouble getting motivated to go on the ice.  Newsflash, it is your job and you get paid over 3 million a year to do so!  Obviously being in a backup role this season would be hard after leading your team to the Stanley Cup final the previous season, but Emery needs to become a man and accept his role.  If he doesn’t Ottawa needs to do something about it to have a chance at repeating last years success.

Here is a video of Emery’s fight with a Buffalo Goalie and Enforcer!

McCarty Back in the Red and White

Darren McCarty has signed a one year contract with his former club the Detroit Red Wings.

The three time Stanley Cup winner will spend a week or two playing for their AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids for a conditioning stint.

He spent two years in Calgary before coming back to Detroit.  He should add some grit and depth to their offense.
